“First of all, I grew up here as a man,” the 23-year-old Dahlin said after practice. Some five years later, toughened by the adversity of spending his early years playing on a losing team that’s finally showing signs of contending, Dahlin can’t think of a better place to stay for the long-term future than Buffalo after signing an eight-year, $88 million contract extension on Monday. (AP) - Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin arrived in Buffalo from his native Sweden as a raw 18-year-old who could barely speak English, had little experience living away from home, and unprepared for the growing pains he’d face in maturing into a full-rounded player. I think it would be fascinating to read, and I hope there is a chance it comes out one day.BUFFALO, N.Y. He told me, during that visit that he was writing notes toward a kind of "memoir". It was always a pleasure, even a relief, to hear him talk in his office, or later in his home, demonstrating his expansive mind and his constant curiosity. It's as if he was a conducting wire between the small town and the world. He represented the large, outside world to me when I was growing up in the small town of Steinbach. I learned of his contacts with people like Pablo Casals and Aristotle Onassis, some accidental, some related to his love of art and his travels to hear music and see theatre around the world. I learned about many things, including the fact his beloved wife had been an actress in your younger years. I met him at the Steinbach Library two or three years before his death when I did a reading there. He struck me as highly intelligent both in terms of his practice as a doctor but also as a lover and patron of the arts.
